The simple gallery using the defaults is suitable for inclusion in the content area of a post or page. It displays thumbnails and when the visitor clicks on a thumbnail the photo is displayed at ‘medium’ size which is around 520px by 390 px in an overlaid popup window known as a lightbox.
The gallery is best used when photos are of different sizes or orientation because when photos are all different sizes or layouts, they tend to look a bit dis-organised in a slideshow. I think slideshows look best when all photos are the same size and the same way around.
