Hi Les

This looks an issue with PHP Session variables on your server – do you have access to php.ini? Is your server on the cloud?

This is something your web host would normally fix for you. Or they may direct you to your control panel if they give you direct access to PHP settings.

I want very much to use this plugin – retrieving photos via tag is not easily found in most other flickr gallery plugins. But for some reason the plugin leaves an ugly error message on my WP login screen visible when I scroll all the way down: “Warning:Unknown:open(/var/chroot/home/content/02/7838102/tmp/sess_98ngm3tp1te55bc8vdmhu7t3t4, O_RDWR) failed: No such file or directory (2) in Unknown on line 0
Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct () in Unknown on line 0 ”
It still works, and when I deactivate the plugin the message goes away. But it always comes back when I reactivate. I’d be interested in using the pro version if this problem can be fixed. Hope this is sufficient info. -LME

Hi Russell,
Thanks for explaining your logic in why the apostrophes had to go. I understand the need to be extremely flexible in meeting the needs of so many developers. It would be awesome if you could implement what you suggested though. Since the description of an image is so important to the viewer understanding the context and meaning of what they’re seeing, having some punctuation options is critical to this communication. Especially with artwork (title + media) !

Wordpress and Slickr-Flickkr is motivating me to want to be a developer too so my learning has just begun!

I’m using Galleria 1.0 (original version), Classic Theme, and Lightbox with Autoplay Slideshow Option. Best, Ilona

Russell August 11, 2011 at 9:53 am

Hi Ilona.

Thanks for your support on Facebook.

I can explain the disappearing apostrophes – it is down to trying to support more lightboxes. If I leave the apostrophes in the description then a few lightboxes do not render the gallery of thumbnails correctly and the page is a mess. The Flickr photos descriptions are passed through to the lightbox in the alt attribute of the photo image. This alt attribute is itself enclosed in double apostrophes – so the issue is having apostrophes within apostrophes and having 10 different developers of ten different lightboxes all cater for that scenario. So I adopted a lowest common denominator approach. However, instead of removing the quotes entirely, what I could do is replace the standard double quotes by opening and closing quotes – so “Urdu Lesson” becomes “Urdu Lesson”

What galleria version/themes are you using and which lightbox are you using?

Russell

Hi Russell,
I’ll have you know that I have recently ‘LIKED’ Slickr Flickr on my Facebook account and I have over 1300 ‘friends,’ many of which are artists who may be very interested in knowing more.

Finally my web guy helped me rectify what I didn’t want in the upgrade and eliminate the “start” and “stop” buttons through re-writing the code that gotten overwritten. Thank you for all your support! The one thing that neither of us can understand is why the upgrade has changed the nature of my titles which are pulled directly from Flickr, right? Before the upgrade I made sure to put the title of every photo like this: “Urdu Lesson,” pencil on paper. Etc. etc. but after the upgrade, it has wiped out the apostrophes. Why would that be and how can I get them back? Basically, it wiped out all punctuation that had been entered onto Flickr. Thanks again!!!

Francis, Thanks for the feedback. I do have plans to add other photo sources such as Picasa, NextGen Galleries, Amazon S3 buckets and will add Mobile Me to that list. The output format for the photos will include a ‘slider’ in addition to the existing slideshow, gallery and galleria. The plugin would need to have a new name though. Unfortunately I have a bunch of other projects on the go right now so it will be a few months before I can start.

Designwallah August 9, 2011 at 5:39 pm

I’ve just started using WordPress and so far, I find SlickrFlickr to be the best slideshow plugin. It’s clean and works very well. It solved my Flickr slideshow needs. next I tried plugins for Picasa and Mobile Me and I haven’t found one that matches SlickrFlickr, so my suggestions is: why not extend this to other photo-sharing websites? It would be great to be able to use the same plugin to get the same look and feel.

Thanks,

Francis.

Russell August 8, 2011 at 1:36 pm

Hi Ilona,

If you are using Galleria 1.0 then you can use nav=”above”, nav=”below” or nav=”none” to have the navigation just above, just below the photo or not at all.

Also you can remove the scrollbar by adding a line to your theme’s ‘stylesheet style.css file that over-rides the restriction .slickr-flickr-galleria { max-height: 800px; }

Russell August 8, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Hi Ilona,

To use Galleria 1.2.3, change the Galleria version option in Slickr Flickr Admin settings. The standard Galleria 1.2.3 does not have thumbnails and instead uses a carousel. See http://galleria.aino.se/docs/1.2/options/ for the umpteen options setting of the latest Galleria. The default setting is for a carousel but you can use thumbnails instead by setting options=”carousel:false” however you will have to play around with the height parameter depending on how many rows of thumbnails you have.

Which lightbox do you have installed and what is your LightBox option settings in Slickr Flickr Admin Settings?

You can have captions and descriptions on the gallery(plus lightbox), the slideshow and the galleria. For galleria 1.2.3 the captions and decsriptions are under the ‘i’ button.

For the gallery lightbox then some lightboxes support descriptions and other do not – see http://www.slickrflickr.com/1717/using-slickr-flickr-with-other-lightboxes/

You can go back to an earlier version of Slickr Flickr by deactivating the plugin, deleting it, then choosing the old version on the the Slickr Flickr page on WordPress at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/slickr-flickr/download/, downloading the appropriate version of the zip file from the list, and then back on your blog click Add New Plugin then upload the plugin and activate it. You Flickr ID, FLickr API settings, etc will be ‘remembered’.

In you’re on FaceBook please ‘Like’ Slickr Flickr – the Like Box is in the sidebar. Thanks

Regards

Hi Russell,
I’ve studied the lightbox options and I’d like to know what the default was before I upgraded to 1.32. I do regret doing that because I don’t want a slideshow at all, with the “Start” and “Stop,” nor do I want the slider and unfortunately, all my captions that I’ve been working so hard in Flickr to get consistant with quotation marks around just the “title” and rest of the information separate has now gone out the window. Who would have known that an upgrade would have added features that I don’t want. Can I go backwards to the previous version without risking losing all? I loved what I had and now it’s gone :(

Ilona Sturm August 8, 2011 at 3:16 am

Hi Russell. Thanks so much for your quick response. I have the version Galleria 1.0 (classic) and you mentioned that the “Start” and “Stop” might be related to that? How would I get the Galleria 1.2.3? Or for now is it easier or even possible to eliminate the “Start” and “Stop”? Thanks again! Ilona

Russell August 8, 2011 at 12:24 am

Hi Ilona,

Please can you indicate what ‘type’ you are using? gallery, galleria or slideshow?

I do not believe that anything in this area has changed recently in Slickr Flickr. The only thing in Slickr Flickr with Start and Stop is the Galleria 1.0 navigation menu and I have not changed this for over a year.

Many users have started using the new Galleria 1.2.3 which has a lot more features such as a carousel, slide transitions and different skins.

Regards

Russell

Ilona Sturm August 7, 2011 at 11:06 pm

Hello! I have just updated and an unwanted change appeared. I am not interested in using the slideshow feature but now — in between “Previous” and “Next” appears” “Start” and “Stop.” How can I eliminate these options? Slickr-Flickr is really coming along!!! Thanks!

Russell July 21, 2011 at 3:03 am

Hi Santiago,

No, there is no function as such, however you could write some custom PHP that runs at the filter ‘the_content’ that checks for the existence of the string ‘slickr-flickr-gallery’ in the content.

You would need to set the priority of the filter so it runs AFTER all shortcode substitution has taken place.

See http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Filter_Reference/the_content for more information.

Santiago Valdés July 21, 2011 at 2:50 am

Dear Russell, thanks for your answer.
Another doubt I have, is there a conditional function to know if a slickr-flickr gallery was called?
I want to make something like:
if(slickr flickr) { show some stuff } else { nothing }
Is it possible?

Thanks,

Liz July 20, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Hi Santiago

No – there is no current option to place a button on TinyMCE. Slickr Flickr currently has over 30 options, (and more are planned for the PRO version as we have outstanding requests for new functionality). If we were to try to squeeze this into a point and click interface such as TinyMCE, it would make Slickr Flickr hard to use and harder to maintain at our end.

The short codes are clean and clear especially given the large range of options available now and coming in future versions. Hope that makes sense. Liz

Santiago Valdés July 20, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Hello,

I was wondering, is there any option to put a button on TinyMCE? At least in mine it doesn’t appear, I’m on 3.2.1

Thanks,

Russell July 15, 2011 at 2:58 pm

Hi Danny,

The error is to do with the galleria not finding the classic theme: see http://images.slickrflickr.com.s3.amazonaws.com/comments/galleria-missing-theme-page-speed.jpg

Please upgrade to the latest version of Slickr Flickr ; the footprint suggests you are not running 1.29. Also please try loading the scripts in the header and not the footer – this setting is in Slickr Flickr Admin settings (in version 1.29)

Please try temporarily disabling the ‘page speed’ feature – it may be that it is confusing the galleria.

Regards

Russell

Danny July 15, 2011 at 1:30 pm

Hi Russel,

Thanks for all your help. I tried that but it just prevented the light box from opening. I installed lightbox plus, which works for gallerys but the slide show is still not loading. Interestingly. I opened the site on a computer I have never used before, using IE 8, yesterday and the slideshow worked but after clearing the cache, deleting and re creating my profile and trying again, it still fails to work for me.

Russell July 14, 2011 at 8:14 pm

Danny, The code on your site looks fine – but the slickr_flickr_start() function is not running.

It might be that you have 2 lightboxes installed – Flickr Gallery has flightbox and Slickr Flickr installs a default lightbox.

Try going into Slickr Flickr Admin and choosing “LightBox Plus” say – this will stop Slickr Flickr installing its lightbox – this might help

Danny July 14, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Hi Russell,

Sad news :( no error in the script. This one is mystifying me a little.

Russell July 14, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Hi Danny,

Your site most probably has a javascript error – view the page in Google Chrome or Firefox and then right click and “Inspect Element” – look for a red cross at the very bottom of the page.

The red cross is clickable (an underline will appear if you hover over it) and clicking will display a panel that show you exactly where the error is occurring

Danny July 14, 2011 at 1:50 pm

I have a problem with the slideshows and gallerias. The slideshow only displays one picture in the set (see my home page) and the galleria just shows a ul list of images. Only the gallery is working. Where should I start looking to solve this?

Liz July 13, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Hi Adam

This is Liz. Russell’s wife. You have errors on your page which is why it isn’t working for you. I have your slideshow working in one of my sites and it’s fine. Slickr Flickr, amazing as it is, can’t work if the Slickr Flickr code can’t run because of a missing jquery library.

Your error is :
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found) jquery.tools.min.js

Adam Friedman July 13, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Apparently, the Slickr Flickr tag I put in a text widget on my homepage is not rotating at all. It is pulling all the photos (if you check the Net panel in Firebug, and the source code on the page) and is displaying the first one, but is failing to rotate. If you check out http://wp.massvote.org you will see the problem, in the right-hand sidebar. It just sits there.

I’m using this code in a text widget: [slickr-flickr id="64596359@N02" type="slideshow"]
Here’s the user’s Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/64596359@N02/

I am using the latest version. One hunch I had is that it is a javascript problem, but my browser’s error console shows no errors, and other scripts work fine.

Thanks for checking this out.

Russell July 2, 2011 at 6:15 pm

Hi Jack,

My understanding is that the 30 Flickr user photos limit refers to large photos and not thumbnails.

Also with WordPress caching each gallery/slideshow only accesses Flickr once every 12 hours so the hit on Flickr is minimal. My suggestion would be to stick to the rule ‘Do not use an unreasonable amount of bandwidth’

Russell July 2, 2011 at 6:04 pm

Hi Jack,

Double check the quotation marks around the size parameter – they need to be standard double quotes – the closing quote appears to be a different type from the opening quote

Jack Rugile July 1, 2011 at 9:47 pm

Hey Russell,

First off, thanks for the amazing plugin. I have two question for you though:

My full image sizes seem to continue to show medium, even though I have specified size=”m640″ in my shortcode. I double checked to make sure I had that size on my Flickr images, and I do. Do you know what could be causing them to serve the 500 width version instead of the 640?

Also, do I have to worry about showing 50 images at a time? In the Flickr API terms of use they state: “You shall not display more than 30 Flickr user photos per page in your application or use an unreasonable amount of bandwidth.”

I apologize if these are duplicate questions. Thanks again for the amazing plugin!

Russell June 28, 2011 at 2:53 am

I agree. It is most likely your theme’s style.css that is overriding the plugin CSS – I am surprised that it only affects FF5 though

Rick Powell June 28, 2011 at 2:24 am

@Russell Yes, that gallery looks fine to me. Strange. Maybe some interaction with FF 5 and my theme… no clue.

Russell June 28, 2011 at 2:00 am

Sorry about that – it’s late here – I was not paying enough attention. However Firefox 5 does work fine for galleries on this site – at least for me.

Does this page work for you? http://www.slickrflickr.com/support/large-thumbnails-in-a-gallery/

Rick Powell June 28, 2011 at 1:39 am

@Russel That’s because that’s NextGen Gallery and not slickr flickr. I had to turn slickr flickr off.

Russell June 28, 2011 at 1:34 am

Firefox 5 is working okay for me on this site (using a MacBook)

http://images.slickrflickr.com.s3.amazonaws.com/comments/supper-club-firefox.jpg

Rick Powell June 27, 2011 at 10:32 pm

This seems to be a problem with Firefox 5 because FF 4 did not exhibit this problem.
Galleries are now in unordered lists rather than in rows:
https://skitch.com/rickpowell/fg6bu/maxs-supper-club-in-buenos-aires-artsy-closed-door-restaurant

Safari, Chrome and Opera for Mac render the gallery correctly.

Just a heads up. Unfortunately, I’ll have to disable slickr flickr until (if) Mozilla fixes this presumably CSS issue.

greg maffei June 17, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Hi Russel-

Thanks for the reply. Just wanted to say thanks for keeping me from banging my head against the wall looking for the transition setting. I appreciate the work you’ve put into this plug-in. I’m a self-taught hack stumbling though, and your tools make it a lot easier.

Now to figure out how to “use jQuery to override the default transition time of 0.5 seconds.”

Thanks again.
Greg

Russell June 17, 2011 at 10:06 am

Hi Rachael,

The thumbnail parameters, thumbnail_size, thumbnail_scale and thumbnail_captions only apply to the gallery – not the galleria. I have updated the Slickr Flickr documentation to make this clear

As you correctly stated galleria 1.0 does take its size from the container element. With Galleria 1.0 I modified the original version from the developer to support multiple gallerias per page.

In November 2010, Galleria 1.2 was released this has been updated again in April 2011 with Galleria 1.2.3. These later versions supported multiple gallerias per page as well as having another 60 features such a carousel, image resizing and cropping, thumbnail resizing and cropping, etc. Slickr Flickr comes bundled with Galleria 1.2 and 1.2.3 ‘out of the box’ and you can configure it by using the “options” parameter. My recommendation is that you check out the latest galleria as it may be easier to control the image size using parameters rather than using CSS.

Please take a look at this example of using the Galleria options with Slickr Flickr. This sets a slide transition however the same techniques apply to setting the other galleria options.

In the next Slickr Flickr release which is on the 25th June, I will be improving Slickr Flickr integration with Galleria so that no Slickr Flickr CSS is involved and this will allow Slickr Flickr to work well with the new Galleria themes such as Twelve and Fullscreen as well as Classic and Folio.

Russell June 17, 2011 at 9:35 am

Hi Greg,

Apologies if it is not clear from the documentation but setting slideshow “height”, “width” and “transition” are all Slickr Flickr Pro features. However, with the standard edition you can use jQuery to override the default transition time of 0.5 seconds.

Regards

Russell

Rachael June 17, 2011 at 7:45 am

Hi Russell,
sorry I meant to include a link to the page I was referring to:

thanks!

Rachae June 17, 2011 at 7:42 am

Hi
I am using slickr flickr galleria, in the original version, and I think there is a problem with the way the thumbnails are displaying. I’ve specified thumbnail=square, but it’s using the full size image and scaling it to the height of the container element. Is this a bug? or is there another way to control the size of the image?
Thanks for any help you can give me with this!

greg maffei June 16, 2011 at 10:56 pm

I’m having trouble with the slideshow “transitions” setting. I’ve tried several different methods of changing it, but nothing seems to be working. It’s not quite clear to me if I need to subscribe to the “pro” version to be able to use that setting, or if it was incorporated into the regular version. I’m using 1.29, and I’m using embedded php rather than quick code in brackets.

echo slickr_flickr_display( array(‘type’ => ‘slideshow’, ‘items’ => ’15′, ‘delay’ => ’10′, ‘size’ => ‘large’, ‘transition’ => ’4.0′, ‘description’ => ‘on’,'id’ => ’54461429@N06′, ‘tag’ => ‘flow’));

As you can see, I’ve called out ‘transition’ as 4.0 for 4 seconds. I’ve also put that value in the plug-in admin page, as well as manually editing the plug-in default setting, but it always seems to just play at the 0.5 second default setting. I’m looking for a really slow blend.

Russell June 16, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Hi Andre,

There already is a “photos_per_row” parameter so that will fit in nicely with the pagination feature

regards

Russell

Andre June 16, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Thanks for your reply Russel! It’s good to hear that you are planning of implementing. Hopefully you will get time to do it allready in July ,-) I am supposed to finish this project in the summer, and would therefore need to find a solution as soon as possible. But I’ll wait a bit before looking more into other alternatives. It would be very good if the pagination feature would allow the user to specify the amount of thumbnails beeing showned on each page, as well as specify how many rows, and how many thumbnails each row will have!

Regards, André

Russell June 15, 2011 at 7:44 pm

Hi Andre,

Thanks for your comments. Right now there is limited support for paging by specify “page” (the page number) and “per_page” (the number of photos on each page). See http://www.slickrflickr.com/2278/flickr-paged-gallery/

I have plans to add a proper paging feature in either July or August then has links for the previous and next page, and a list of page numbers that allow the user to navigate directly to the appropriate page

Andre June 15, 2011 at 6:50 pm

Hi!

I really like your plugin, and I am thinking about buying the PRO version. However, before I can do that I need to know if it is possible to split/group the thumbnails into separate thumbnail “pages”. The site I am working on often has over 100-300 images in one set. Displaying such a set with the plugin would therefore make the thumbnails take ALOT of space – and result in extensive scrolling. I need some kind of a possibility to limit the amount of thumbnails beeing showned. For example on Flickr.com they seem to limit the thumbnail per page to 72, and a link to “next” and “previous”. Is this possible with your plugin?

Russell May 5, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Hi Vicky,

Crystal clear now. An excellent precise and concise specification.

You can do this with a single line of CSS that hides all but the first thumbnail in the group.

Regards

Russell

Vicky May 5, 2011 at 11:32 am

Hi Russell,

Sorry for not making myself clear.

I have a number of photo’s tagged in Flickr that are called into a wordpress page using the Slickr Flickr short code. They display correctly and are fine.

Each tagged image displays it’s own thumbnail image that can be clicked on to enlarge, and when you do click on it you can scroll forward or back between the tagged photos. I would like to be able to display one thumbnail image for the whole tag category rather than displaying a thumbnail for every image tagged. Hopefully I’ve explained it better than I first did.

Really sorry for any confusion.

Russell May 5, 2011 at 11:13 am

Hi Vicky,

THanks for your question but I do not fully understand it. Please can you clarify:

What do you mean by “a gallery is available”. Are you referring to the collections known as “galleries” in Flickr? – see http://www.flickr.com/help/galleries/

Also which thumbnail is to be displayed?

Also what do you mean by separate photos? Do you mean a different set photos from those in the thumbnail gallery?

Vicky May 5, 2011 at 10:32 am

Hi,

I’ve installed the Slickr Flickr plugin which is a great plugin.

However I was wondering if there was a way to only display on thumbnail image to show a gallery is available but when clicked on for the LightBox to appear can scroll through to each photo tagged.

Also can the separate photo’s be downloaded from the plugin when displaying in the LightBox.

Sorry if this question has been asked and answered before, but I couldn’t find it in the FAQ’s.

Thanks in advance.

Vicky
